How MapPlanet works

Find a place. Mark it. Describe it. Let others discover it.

1. Explore the world map

Move freely around the world map or use Search places to find a city or a specific area. You can zoom with the mouse wheel, by clicking the map, or with a two-finger gesture on touch devices. The zoom level can also be selected directly from the menu.

Hex cells appear from zoom level 8 onward: small six-sided areas into which MapPlanet divides the world map. Each cell can contain its own entry.

2. Find your way around the map

Under Settings, you can show or hide additional orientation aids: cities, geographic features, Earth shadow and, at zoom levels 8 and 9, the OSM background. The OSM background adds roads, waterways and other detail based on OpenStreetMap.

Use Discover to find existing entries. This lets you browse MapPlanet without creating an entry yourself.

3. Mark a place

At zoom level 9, click a free hex cell to select it. If a cell is already occupied, clicking it opens the existing entry.

4. Describe the place

Add a title, free-form text, images and, optionally, an external link. It can be a personal story, a memorable experience, nature, a geographic feature or a project - including a small environmental project that is not widely known yet.

5. Let others discover it

Your entry appears directly at its geographic location on the world map. As you zoom in, the image becomes visible; clicking the place opens the full entry with its text, images and link.

MapPlanet is not a competition for likes or reach. It is about interesting places, stories and projects - often beyond the obvious.

6. Manage your entries

You can edit or delete your own entries later.
